Two long, straight wires carry equal currents in opposite directions as shown in figure. The separation between the wires is 5.0 cm. The magnitude of the magnetic field at a point P midway between the wires is ______

Solution

The two currents (10 A each, from the figure) point in opposite directions, so at the midpoint their fields add. At distance

r = 2.5 \times 1 0^{- 2}

m from each wire,

B_{t o t a l} = 2 \times \frac{μ _{0} i}{2 π r} = \frac{μ _{0} i}{π r} = \frac{4 π \times 1 0 ^{- 7} \times 10}{π \times 2.5 \times 1 0 ^{- 2}} = 1.6 \times 1 0^{- 4} T = 160 μ T
