At minimum deviation, the prism formula gives

μ = \frac{sin ( \frac{A + δ _{min}}{2} )}{sin \frac{A}{2}}

Here

μ = cot \frac{A}{2} = \frac{cos ( A /2 )}{sin ( A /2 )}

, so

cos \frac{A}{2} = sin (\frac{A + δ _{min}}{2}) = sin (\frac{π}{2} - \frac{A}{2})

Equating the arguments,

\frac{A + δ _{min}}{2} = \frac{π}{2} - \frac{A}{2}

, so

δ_{min} = π - 2 A
