In the given reactions identify the reagent A and reagent B
(A)A−CrO3, B- CrO3
(B)A−CrO3, B- CrO2Cl2✓ Correct
(C)A−CrO2Cl2, B- CrO2Cl2
(D)A−CrO2Cl2, B- CrO3
Answer: (B)
Solution
Etard-type sequence: the toluene methyl group is first protected/activated with CrO3/(CH3CO)2O (reagent A) to give the benzylidene diacetate, which on hydrolysis (H3O+) gives the aldehyde.
In the parallel route, the methyl group is oxidised directly by CrO2Cl2 (reagent B, the Etard reaction) via the chromium complex CH[OCrCl2(OH)]2, which on hydrolysis also gives the aldehyde.
So A =CrO3 and B =CrO2Cl2.
