9.3 g of aniline is subjected to reaction with excess of acetic anhydride to prepare acetanilide. The mass of acetanilide produced if the reaction is 100% completed is ____×10−1g. (Given molar mass in gmol−1 N: 14, O: 16, C: 12, H : 1)
Answer: 135
Solution
Aniline, C6H5NH2 (molar mass 6(12)+7(1)+14=93 g/mol), reacts with excess acetic anhydride in a 1:1 stoichiometry to give acetanilide, C6H5NHCOCH3 (molar mass 8(12)+9(1)+14+16=135 g/mol), with acetic acid as by-product.
Moles of aniline =939.3=0.1 mol, so moles of acetanilide formed =0.1 mol, giving a mass of 0.1×135=13.5 g =135×10−1 g.
