The area (in square units) of the region enclosed by the ellipse x2+3y2=18 in the first quadrant below the line y=x is :
(A)3π+43
(B)3π✓ Correct
(C)3π−43
(D)3π+1
Answer: (B)
Solution
Ellipse: 18x2+6y2=1, i.e. y=318−x2 in the first quadrant. Line y=x meets it where x2+3x2=18⟹x0=23.
For x<x0 the ellipse lies above the line (yellipse(0)=6>0); for x>x0 the ellipse lies below the line. So the region enclosed by the ellipse, in the first quadrant, below y=x is
Area=∫0x0xdx+∫x018318−x2dx
First term: 2x02=29/2=49.
Second term: using ∫18−x2dx=2x18−x2+9sin−118x, at x=18: value =0+9⋅2π=29π. at x=x0=23: 18−x02=18−4.5=13.5=236, so first part =2x0⋅236=493; and sin−1(18x0)=sin−121=6π, giving second part =23π. So value at x0=493+23π.
∫x01818−x2dx=29π−(493+23π)=3π−493
Dividing by 3: second term of the area =3π−49.
Area=49+(3π−49)=3π
