A parallel beam of monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm passes through single slit of 0.4 mm width. Angular divergence corresponding to second order minima would be ____

Solution

Single-slit minimum:

b sin θ = nλ

, so for

n = 2

θ = \frac{2 λ}{b} = \frac{2 ( 600 \times 1 0 ^{- 9} )}{0.4 \times 1 0 ^{- 3}} = 3 \times 1 0^{- 3}

rad. The angular divergence (both sides of the central maximum) is

2 θ = 6 \times 1 0^{- 3}

rad.
