The vehicles carrying inflammable fluids usually have metallic chains touching the ground :
- (A)To conduct excess charge due to air friction to ground and prevent sparking.✓ Correct
- (B)To alert other vehicles.
- (C)To protect tyres from catching dirt from ground.
- (D)It is a custom.
Answer: (A)
Solution
Motion of the vehicle through air produces friction between the vehicle body and the air, and this friction charges the vehicle body electrostatically. If this charge is allowed to accumulate, a spark can eventually jump between the vehicle and the ground and ignite the inflammable fluid being carried. The trailing metallic chain keeps the vehicle body in continuous contact with the ground, so the charge generated by friction leaks away to earth as fast as it forms, and sparking is prevented.
