The compounds that produce CO2 with aqueous NaHCO3 solution are : A. B. C. D. E.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :ABDE
(A)A and C only
(B)A, B and E only
(C)A, C and D only✓ Correct
(D)A and B only
Answer: (C)
Solution
A compound liberates CO2 from aqueous NaHCO3 only if it is a stronger acid than carbonic acid (pKa≈6.35). Benzoic acid (A, pKa≈4.2) and cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (D, pKa≈4.8), both carboxylic acids, comfortably clear this bar, and picric acid (C, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol) is acidified so strongly by its three electron-withdrawing nitro groups that its pKa drops to about 0.4, well below carbonic acid. Plain phenol (B, pKa≈10) and 4-methoxyphenol (E, made even less acidic by the electron-donating methoxy group) are both far weaker acids than carbonic acid and react only with strong base, not with bicarbonate. The compounds that liberate CO2 with NaHCO3 are A, C and D.
