Let the position vectors of three vertices of a triangle be 4p+q−3r,−5p+q+2r and 2p−q+2r. If the position vectors of the orthocenter and the circumcenter of the triangle are 4p+q+r and αp+βq+γr respectively, then α+2β+5γ is equal to:
(A)3✓ Correct
(B)1
(C)6
(D)4
Answer: (A)
Solution
The centroid G of the triangle with vertices 4p+q−3r,−5p+q+2r,2p−q+2r is their average:
G=3(4−5+2)p+(1+1−1)q+(−3+2+2)r=3p+q+r.
For any triangle, the orthocenter H, centroid G, and circumcenter C are collinear on the Euler line with G dividing HC in the ratio 2:1 (from H), which gives the relation
H+2C=3G.
Here H=4p+q+r and C=αp+βq+γr. Substituting:
4p+q+r+2(αp+βq+γr)=3⋅3p+q+r=p+q+r.
So
2(αp+βq+γr)=(p+q+r)−4p+q+r=43(p+q+r),
giving α=β=γ=83.
Therefore
α+2β+5γ=83(1+2+5)=824=3.
