A photograph of a landscape is captured by a drone camera at a height of 18 km . The size of the camera film is 2cm×2cm and the area of the landscape photographed is 400km2. The focal length of the lens in the drone camera is :
(A)1.8 cm✓ Correct
(B)2.8 cm
(C)2.5 cm
(D)0.9 cm
Answer: (A)
Solution
Treat the photographed landscape as a square patch of area 400km2, so its side is
x=400km2=20km=2×104m.
The image on the film is a square of side y=2cm=2×10−2m.
The magnification of the lens is
m=xy=2×1042×10−2=10−6.
For a thin lens, m=uv in magnitude, where u=18km=1.8×104m is the object distance (drone height). So
v=mu=10−6×1.8×104=1.8×10−2m=1.8cm.
Since the object distance is enormously larger than any reasonable focal length (u≫f), the image forms essentially at the focal plane, so v≈f. The focal length of the lens is therefore 1.8 cm.
