A solid sphere and a hollow sphere of the same mass and of same radius are rolled on an inclined plane. Let the time taken to reach the bottom by the solid sphere and the hollow sphere be t1 and t2, respectively, then
(A)t1<t2✓ Correct
(B)t1=t2
(C)t1=2t2
(D)t1>t2
Answer: (A)
Solution
For a body of moment of inertia Icm=kmR2 rolling without slipping down an incline of angle θ, the acceleration of the centre of mass is
acm=1+kgsinθ.
For a solid sphere, k=52:
a1=1+52gsinθ=75gsinθ.
For a hollow (thin-shell) sphere, k=32:
a2=1+32gsinθ=53gsinθ.
Comparing, 75≈0.714 is greater than 53=0.6, so a1>a2: the solid sphere accelerates faster. Since the time to cover a fixed length ℓ starting from rest is t=2ℓ/a, a larger acceleration means a shorter time. Hence t1<t2: the solid sphere reaches the bottom first.
