Let ABCD be a trapezium whose vertices lie on the parabola y2=4x. Let the sides AD and BC of the trapezium be parallel to y -axis. If the diagonal AC is of length 425 and it passes through the point (1,0), then the area of ABCD is :
(A)475✓ Correct
(B)225
(C)8125
(D)875
Answer: (A)
Solution
The parabola is y2=4x, so a=1 and the focus is (1,0).
Since AC is a focal chord passing through (1,0), take A=(t2,2t); the other end of a focal chord has parameter −1/t, so C=(t21,−t2).
Length of a focal chord: AC=(t+t1)2 (with a=1). Setting this equal to 425:
(t+t1)2=425⇒t+t1=25⇒t=2or21
Taking t=2: A=(4,4) and C=(41,−1).
Since AD is parallel to the y-axis, D lies on the parabola with the same x-coordinate as A: D=(4,−4).
Since BC is parallel to the y-axis, B lies on the parabola with the same x-coordinate as C: B=(41,1).
So AD (length 8, at x=4) and BC (length 2, at x=41) are the parallel sides, and the height (horizontal distance between them) is 4−41=415.
Area of trapezium =21(AD+BC)×height=21(8+2)×415=475
