A conducting bar moves on two conducting rails as shown in the figure. A constant magnetic field B exists into the page. The bar starts to move from the vertex at time t=0 with a constant velocity. If the induced EMF is E ∝tn, then value of n is ______。
Answer: 1
Solution
The two rails meet at a vertex with a total opening angle of 60∘ (30∘ on each side of the axis along which the bar slides). At time t, the bar has moved a distance x=vt from the vertex, and the length of the bar in contact with the rails at that instant is
ℓ=2xtan30∘=32x
The motional EMF of a rod of length ℓ moving with speed v in a field B perpendicular to the plane is
E=Bℓv
Substituting ℓ=32x with x=vt:
E=B(32vt)v=32Bv2t
So E∝t1, giving n=1.
