The number of 3×3 matrices A whose entries are either 0 or 1 and for which the system has exactly two distinct solutions, is
  1. (A)0✓ Correct
  2. (B)
  3. (C)168
  4. (D)2

Answer: (A)

Solution

For a linear system to have exactly two distinct solutions is impossible.

A linear system can have:
  • Exactly one solution (when A is invertible)
  • No solution (when the system is inconsistent)
  • Infinitely many solutions (when A is singular and the system is consistent)

A linear system cannot have exactly two (or any finite number greater than one) distinct solutions. This is because if and are two distinct solutions, then any linear combination for is also a solution, giving infinitely many solutions.

Therefore, the number of such matrices is 0.
