Treatment of compound O with gave P, which on heating with ammonia gave Q. The compound Q on treatment with produced R. On strong heating, Q gave S, which on further treatment with ethyl 2-bromopropanoate in the presence of KOH followed by acidification, gave a compound T.

The compound T is
  1. (A)glycine
  2. (B)alanine✓ Correct
  3. (C)valine
  4. (D)serine

Answer: (B)

Solution

Strong heating of phthalimide (Q) gives phthalic anhydride (S). Treatment with ethyl 2-bromopropanoate in the presence of KOH (Gabriel synthesis) followed by acidification produces alanine (2-aminopropanoic acid), which is compound T.
