Let RS be the diameter of the circle x2+y2=1, where S is the point (1,0). Let P be a variable point (other than R and S) on the circle and tangents to the circle at S and P meet at the point Q. The normal to the circle at P intersects a line drawn through Q parallel to RS at point E. Then the locus of E passes through the point(s)
(A)(31,31)✓ Correct
(B)(41,21)
(C)(31,−31)✓ Correct
(D)(41,−21)
Answer: (A), (C)
Solution
Let P(cosθ,sinθ) be a point on the circle.
Tangent at S(1,0): x=1.
Tangent at P: xcosθ+ysinθ=1.
These meet at Q(1,sinθ1−cosθ).
Normal at P passes through origin with slope cosθsinθ: equation y=xtanθ.
Line through Q parallel to RS (the x-axis): y=sinθ1−cosθ.
Intersection E: xtanθ=sinθ1−cosθ, so x=sinθ1−cosθ⋅sinθcosθ.
Using tan2θ=1+cosθsinθ=sinθ1−cosθ, let α=tan2θ.
Then y=α and from cosθ+αsinθ=1, using half-angle formulas, we get the locus y2=1−2x.
Checking: (31,31): 31=1−32=31. True.
(31,−31): also satisfies. True.
