In an experiment to measure the speed of sound by a resonating air column, a tuning fork of frequency is used. The length of the air column is varied by changing the level of water in the resonance tube. Two successive resonances are heard at air columns of length and . Which of the following statements is (are) true?
  1. (A)The speed of sound determined from this experiment is ✓ Correct
  2. (B)The end correction in this experiment is
  3. (C)The wavelength of the sound wave is ✓ Correct
  4. (D)The resonance at corresponds to the fundamental harmonic

Answer: (A), (C)

Solution

Successive resonances differ by half a wavelength, so cm and cm. The speed of sound is m/s. Because cm is far less than cm, the cm resonance is not the fundamental but the next harmonic at ; writing (and ) gives an end correction cm. So the wavelength cm and the speed m/s are correct, while the end correction is not cm and cm is not the fundamental harmonic.
