A thin spherical insulating shell of radius R carries a uniformly distributed charge such that the potential at its surface is V0. A hole with a small area α4πR2(α≪1) is made on the shell without affecting the rest of the shell. Which one of the following statements is correct ?
(A)The ratio of the potential at the center of the shell to that of the point at 21R from center towards the hole will be 1−2α1−α✓ Correct
(B)The magnitude of electric field at the center of the shell is reduced by 2RαV0
(C)The magnitude of electric field at a point, located on a line passing through the hole and shell's center on a distance 2R from the center of the spherical shell will be reduced by 2RαV0
(D)The potential at the center of the shell is reduced by 2αV0
Answer: (A)
Solution
Initially, the shell has charge Q with RkQ=V0. When a hole of area α4πR2 is made, charge removed is αQ.
At point P (distance R/2 from center towards hole):
VP=RkQ−R2kαQ=RkQ(1−2α)
At center C:
VC=RkQ(1−α)
Therefore:
VPVC=1−2α1−α
For the electric field at center: initially zero, after removing charge it becomes R2kαQ (increases, not reduces).
For potential at center: reduction is αV0, not 2αV0.
Only option (A) is correct.
