Statement-I : Due to increase in van der Waals forces, the order of boiling points is CH3CH2CH2I>CH3CH2I>CH3I.
Statement-II : As (see structure A) is more symmetric, its melting point is higher than (see structure B), however its boiling point is lower than (see structure C).
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :ABC
(A)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.✓ Correct
(B)Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.
(C)Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
(D)Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.
Answer: (A)
Solution
Among the iodoalkanes the molecular size and surface area increase along CH3I<CH3CH2I<CH3CH2CH2I, so the van der Waals forces and hence the boiling points rise in the same order, and the first statement is true. For the dichlorobenzenes, the para isomer is the more symmetrical molecule and packs more efficiently in the crystal, so it melts higher than the ortho isomer; however the ortho isomer has a resultant dipole moment while the para isomer has none, so the ortho isomer is held by stronger dipolar forces and boils higher than the para isomer. The second statement is therefore also true, and both statements are correct.
