Consider the following reactions. Total number of electrons in the π bonds and lone pair of electrons in the product (X) is:
(see structure)
(A)12
(B)16
(C)14
(D)18✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Prolonged heating of glucose with HI reduces the whole chain to n-hexane, which on passing over V2O5 at high temperature and pressure aromatises to benzene. Friedel−Crafts acylation of benzene with benzoyl chloride and anhydrous AlCl3 then gives benzophenone, (C6H5)2C=O. In benzophenone the two rings supply six π bonds and the carbonyl one π bond, that is seven π bonds carrying 14 electrons, while the carbonyl oxygen carries two lone pairs, 4 electrons. The total number of electrons in the π bonds and lone pairs is 18.
