Passed over copper at 573K a tertiary alcohol cannot be dehydrogenated to a carbonyl and instead dehydrates, so tert-butyl alcohol gives 2-methylpropene, (CH3)2C=CH2. In the acidic second step the alkene is protonated at the terminal carbon to form the tertiary carbocation (CH3)3C+, which is captured by benzoic acid to give the ester tert-butyl benzoate, C6H5COO−C(CH3)3.
The major product P is tert-butyl benzoate.
