Refer to the figure given below. The values of I1, I2 and I3 are ______.
(A)I1=2.5 A, I2=1.875 A, I3=1.875 A✓ Correct
(B)I1=1.875 A, I2=2.5 A, I3=1.875 A
(C)I1=1.875 A, I2=1.875 A, I3=2.5 A
(D)I1=2.5 A, I2=2.5 A, I3=1.875 A
Answer: (A)
Solution
Take the bottom junction as 0 V; the 5 V cell on the right then fixes the top junction at 5 V. Let the left junction be at VL and the central junction (between the two 2Ω resistors) at VM. The branch joining the central and left junctions contains the 10 V cell and the 1Ω resistor. Kirchhoff's current law gives, at the central junction, 2VM−5+2VM+(VM−VL+10)=0, and at the left junction, 4VL−5+4VL+(VL−VM−10)=0. Solving these, VM=0 V and VL=7.5 V. The current through the 10 V–1Ω branch is I1=VM−VL+10=2.5 A, the current through the lower-left 4Ω resistor is I3=4VL=1.875 A, and the current delivered by the 5 V cell is I2=45−VL+25−VM=1.875 A. Hence I1=2.5 A, I2=1.875 A and I3=1.875 A.
