The area of the region {(x,y):y≤π−∣x∣,y≤∣xsinx∣,y≥0} is :
(A)1+8π2
(B)2+4π2✓ Correct
(C)8π2−1
(D)4+2π2
Answer: (B)
Solution
Both π−∣x∣ and ∣xsinx∣ are even, so the area is twice that for x≥0. On [0,π], ∣xsinx∣=xsinx lies below π−x up to x=2π (the two curves meet there, as 2πsin2π=2π=π−2π) and above it beyond, so the upper boundary is xsinx on [0,2π] and π−x on [2π,π]. Hence the area is 2(∫0π/2xsinxdx+∫π/2π(π−x)dx). The first integral is [−xcosx+sinx]0π/2=1 and the second is [−2(π−x)2]π/2π=8π2. The area is 2(1+8π2)=2+4π2.
