Let A,B and C be the vertices of a variable right angled triangle inscribed in the parabola y2=16x. Let the vertex B containing the right angle be (4,8) and the locus of the centroid of △ABC be a conic C0. Then three times the length of latus rectum of C0 is ____.
Answer: 16
Solution
Parametrise y2=16x as (4t2,8t). The vertex B=(4,8) corresponds to t=1; let A=(4t12,8t1), C=(4t22,8t2). The slope of BA is 4t12−48t1−8=t1+12 and similarly slope of BC is t2+12. The right angle at B gives (t1+1)(t2+1)4=−1, so (t1+1)(t2+1)=−4, i.e. t1t2+(t1+t2)=−5. Writing s=t1+t2, the centroid (h,k) satisfies 3k=8+8s and 3h=4+4(t12+t22)=4+4(s2−2t1t2). Using t1t2=−5−s, 3h=4+4(s2+2s+10). Substituting s=83k−8 gives 3h=169k2+40, so the locus is h=163k2+340, equivalently y2=316(x−340). Its latus rectum is 316, and three times this is 16.
