The number of critical points of the function f(x)={xsinx,1,x=0x=0 in the interval (−2π,2π) is equal to:
(A)1
(B)3
(C)5✓ Correct
(D)7
Answer: (C)
Solution
The function f(x)=xsinx is even and continuous on (−2π,2π) with f(0)=1. Away from the zeros of sinx, f′(x)=sgn(xsinx)x2xcosx−sinx, which vanishes where xcosx−sinx=0, i.e. tanx=x. In (−2π,2π) the equation tanx=x has the three solutions x=0 and x=±x0 with x0≈4.49. At x=±π the ratio xsinx changes sign, so the absolute value forms corners where f′ does not exist, giving two more. In total there are 3+2=5 critical points.
