The soldiers of Napolean army while at Alps during freezing winter suffered a serious problem as regards to the tin buttons of their uniforms. White metallic tin buttons got converted to grey powder. This transformation is related to
- (A)an interaction with nitrogen of the air at very low temperatures
- (B)an interaction with water vapour contained in the humid air
- (C)a change in the partial pressure of oxygen in the air
- (D)a change in the crystalline structure of tin✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
This is the classic case of tin pest. The ordinary white, metallic form of tin, -tin, is stable only above about ; below that it slowly turns into grey -tin, a crumbly non-metallic powder. The transformation is a change in the crystal structure of the element itself, from the tetragonal white form to the diamond-type cubic grey form, and the bitter Alpine cold is what set it off in the soldiers' buttons.
