A mass 'm' moves with a velocity v and collides inelastically with another identical mass. After collision the 1st mass moves with velocity v/3 in a direction perpendicular to the initial direction of motion. Find the speed of the 2nd mass after collision
(A)v
(B)3v
(C)2v/3✓ Correct
(D)v/3
Answer: (C)
Solution
Let the struck mass move off with a component vx along the original direction and vy across it. Along the original direction momentum conservation gives mv=mvx, since the first mass keeps nothing in this direction after leaving perpendicularly, so vx=v. Across it, 0=3mv−mvy, so vy=3v. The speed of the second mass is therefore v2+3v2=34v2=32v.
