Reaction of cyclohexanone with dimethylamine in the presence of catalytic amount of an acid forms a compound if water during the reaction is continuously removed. The compound formed is generally known as
(A)a Schiff's base
(B)an enamine✓ Correct
(C)an imine
(D)an amine
Answer: (B)
Solution
A ketone reacting with an amine can stop at different products depending on the amine. Cyclohexanone with dimethylamine, a secondary amine, cannot form an imine, because an imine needs the N−H of a primary amine to finish as the C=N. Instead, after the nitrogen adds and water is driven off, a proton leaves the α-carbon, placing the double bond between carbon and carbon next to the nitrogen. That C=C−N product, formed with continuous removal of water, is an enamine.
