Lattice energy of an ionic compounds depends upon
  1. (A)Charge on the ion only
  2. (B)Size of the ion only
  3. (C)Packing of ions only
  4. (D)Charge on the ion and size of the ion✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Lattice energy measures how tightly the ions are held together in the crystal, and the Born-Lande picture shows it rising with the product of the ionic charges and falling as the ions grow larger, . Both factors are therefore built in: higher charges pull the lattice tighter, while bigger ions push the centres apart and loosen it. The lattice energy thus depends on the charge and the size of the ions together, not on either one alone.
