Which one of the following species is diamagnetic in nature?
  1. (A)
  2. (B)✓ Correct
  3. (C)
  4. (D)

Answer: (B)

Solution

Magnetic behaviour comes down to whether any electrons are left unpaired, and the molecular-orbital filling settles it. In the two electrons both sit paired in the bonding orbital, , leaving nothing unpaired, so the molecule is diamagnetic. Each of the others carries an odd electron: and have the arrangement with a lone electron in the antibonding level, and has only , so all three are paramagnetic. Only has every electron paired.
