The resultant R of two forces acting on a particle is at right angles to one of them and its magnitude is one third of the other force. The ratio of larger force to smaller one is
(A)2:1
(B)3:2
(C)3:2
(D)3:22✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Take F along a reference direction and let the larger force F′ make an angle θ with it. The resultant is (F+F′cosθ,F′sinθ); for it to be perpendicular to F its component along F must vanish, so F+F′cosθ=0. The resultant then has magnitude F′sinθ, and this equals 3F′, so sinθ=31. From cosθ=−F′F and sin2θ+cos2θ=1 we get F′2F2=1−91=98, hence FF′=223. The larger force to the smaller is therefore 3:22.
