Let be a relation on the set be a relation on the set . The relation is
  1. (A)reflexive and transitive only✓ Correct
  2. (B)reflexive only
  3. (C)an equivalence relation
  4. (D)reflexive and symmetric only

Answer: (A)

Solution

A relation is reflexive when every element is related to itself; here , , and are all present, so it is reflexive. For symmetry we would need the reverse of each pair, but belongs to the relation while does not, so it is not symmetric and therefore not an equivalence relation. Checking transitivity, every chain that can be formed, such as with requiring , is completed by a pair already in the relation. The relation is thus reflexive and transitive only.
