AB is a vertical pole with B at the ground level and A at the top. A man finds that the angle of elevation of the point A from a certain point C on the ground is 60∘. He moves away from the pole along the line BC to a point D such that CD=7m. From D the angle of elevation of the point A is 45∘. Then the height of the pole is
(A)273⋅3−11m
(B)273⋅(3+1)m✓ Correct
(C)273⋅(3−1)m
(D)273⋅3+11
Answer: (B)
Solution
Let the pole have height h and let C be at distance x from its foot. From C the elevation is 60∘, so h=xtan60∘=x3, and from D, a further 7m away, the elevation is 45∘, so h=x+7. Equating, x3=x+7 gives x=3−17=27(3+1), and therefore h=x3=273(3+1)m.
