An organic compound A upon reacting with NH3 gives B. On heating B gives C. C in presence of KOH reacts with Br2 to give CH3CH2NH2. A is
(A)CH3CH2CH2COOH
(B)(see structure)
(C)CH3CH2COOH✓ Correct
(D)CH3COOH
Answer: (C)
Solution
The final amine CHX3CHX2NHX2 has one carbon fewer than the amide it came from, the signature of the Hofmann bromamide degradation, in which C treated with BrX2 and KOH loses a carbon to give the amine. Stepping back, C must be the amide CHX3CHX2CONHX2, formed by heating the ammonium salt B, CHX3CHX2COONHX4, which in turn came from A reacting with ammonia. So A is propionic acid, CHX3CHX2COOH.
