There is a circular tube in a vertical plane. Two liquids which do not mix and of densities d1 and d2 are filled in the tube. Each liquid subtends 90∘ angle at centre. Radius joining their interface makes an angle α with vertical. ratio d1/d2 is
(A)1−tanα1+tanα✓ Correct
(B)1−cosα1+sinα
(C)1−sinα1+sinα
(D)1−cosα1+cosα
Answer: (A)
Solution
Balance the pressures where the two liquid columns meet at the lowest level of the tube. With the interface radius tilted at angle α to the vertical, the heavier arc pushes down through d1gR(cosα−sinα) and the other through d2gR(cosα+sinα), and at equilibrium these are equal: d1gR(cosα−sinα)=d2gR(cosα+sinα). Cancel gR and divide top and bottom by cosα to get d2d1=cosα−sinαcosα+sinα=1−tanα1+tanα.
