Which of the following salts is the most basic in aqueous solution?
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)✓ Correct
- (D)
Answer: (C)
Solution
A salt is basic in water when it comes from a strong base and a weak acid, so that its anion hydrolyses to release . Lead acetate pairs a weak base with a weak acid, iron(III) chloride is the salt of a strong acid and so is acidic, and aluminium cyanide pairs two weak partners, while only potassium acetate, from strong and weak , hydrolyses to give a clearly basic solution, making it the most basic of the set.
