Seven identical circular planar disks, each of mass M and radius R are welded symmetrically as shown. The moment of inertia of the arrangement about the axis normal to the plane and passing through the point P is :
(A)2181MR2✓ Correct
(B)219MR2
(C)255MR2
(D)273MR2
Answer: (A)
Solution
Build the moment of inertia about the central axis first and then shift it to P. The central disc contributes 2MR2. Each of the six surrounding discs has its own centre a distance 2R from the central axis, so by the parallel-axis theorem each contributes 2MR2+M(2R)2=29MR2, and the six with the centre give Icm=2MR2+6×29MR2=255MR2. Point P lies 3R from the centre of the whole arrangement, so carrying the full mass 7M there gives IP=255MR2+7M(3R)2=255MR2+63MR2=2181MR2.
