A gas undergoes physical adsorption on a surface and follows the given Freundlich adsorption isotherm equation

Adsorption of the gas increases with:
  1. (A)Increase in and decrease in T✓ Correct
  2. (B)Increase in and increase in T
  3. (C)Decrease in and increase in T
  4. (D)Decrease in and decrease in T

Answer: (A)

Solution

The Freundlich isotherm shows the amount adsorbed rising with pressure. Physical adsorption is exothermic, so by Le Chatelier's principle lowering the temperature drives it forward and raises the uptake. Adsorption is therefore favoured by higher pressure and lower temperature.
