In a meter bridge experiment, the circuit diagram and the corresponding observation table are shown in figure.
\begin{tabular}{ccc} Sl. No. & R(Ω) & l(cm) \\
& 1000 & 60 \\
& 100 & 13 \\
& 10 & 1.5 \\
& 1 & 1.0
\end{tabular}
Which of the readings is inconsistent?
(A)4✓ Correct
(B)3
(C)2
(D)1
Answer: (A)
Solution
In a metre bridge the unknown is x=ℓR(100−ℓ). The first three readings give x=601000×40≈667Ω, x=13100×87≈669Ω and x=1.510×98.5≈656Ω, all clustering near 660Ω. The fourth gives x=11×99=99Ω, wildly different from the rest, so that observation is the inconsistent one.
