Figure shows charge (q) versus voltage (V) graph for series and parallel combination of to given capacitors. The capacitances are:
(A)40μF and 10μF✓ Correct
(B)50μF and 30μF
(C)60μF and 40μF
(D)20μF and 30μF
Answer: (A)
Solution
Since q=CV, the slope of a q versus V line is simply the capacitance. The steeper line therefore belongs to the larger capacitance, the parallel combination, and the gentler line to the smaller, series combination. For capacitors of 40μF and 10μF the parallel value is 40+10=50μF and the series value is 40+1040×10=8μF, which is exactly the pair of slopes read off the graph.
