In the given circuit the internal resistance of the 18 V cell is negligible. If R1=400Ω,R3=100Ω and R4=500Ω and the reading of an ideal voltmeter across R4 is 5 V , then the value of R2 will be
(A)300Ω✓ Correct
(B)450Ω
(C)550Ω
(D)230Ω
Answer: (A)
Solution
Work backwards from the voltmeter. It reads 5V across R4=500Ω, so the current there is i4=5005=0.01A, and since R3 is in series with R4 the same current drops V3=0.01×100=1V across it. The R3--R4 branch therefore sits at 6V, leaving 18−6=12V across R1, so the current in R1 is i1=40012=0.03A. By the junction rule the current turning into the R2 branch is i2=0.03−0.01=0.02A against a 6V drop, giving R2=0.026=300Ω.
