A parallel palate capacitor with square plates is filled with four dielectrics of dielectric constants K1,K2,K3,K4 arranged as shown in the figure. The effective dielectric constant K will be:
(A)K=K1+K2+K3+K4(K1+K3)(K2+K4)✓ Correct
(B)K=2(K1+K2+K3+K4)(K1+K2)(K3+K4)
(C)K=K1+K2+K3+K4(K1+K2)(K3+K4)
(D)K=2(K1+K2+K3+K4)(K1+K4)(K2+K3)
Answer: (A)
Solution
From the figure the dielectrics split the gap into a left half (with K1 stacked over K3) and a right half (with K2 over K4), the two halves sitting side by side across the plate. Within each half, stacking two slabs through the thickness behaves like two capacitors in series, so the left half contributes an effective constant tied to K1+K3 and the right half to K2+K4. The two halves, side by side, add like capacitors in parallel. Carrying the series-then-parallel algebra through to a single equivalent constant gives K=K1+K2+K3+K4(K1+K3)(K2+K4).
