Among the following species, the diamagnetic molecule is
  1. (A)
  2. (B)NO
  3. (C)
  4. (D)CO✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

A diamagnetic species has every electron paired. In molecular-orbital terms carries two unpaired electrons in its orbitals, has one unpaired electron, and has two unpaired electrons in its orbitals, so all three are paramagnetic. Only , with its fourteen electrons filling the molecular orbitals completely in pairs to give a bond order of three like , has no unpaired electron, so carbon monoxide is the diamagnetic molecule.
