A thin convex lens L (refractive index =1.5) is placed on a plane mirror M. When a pin is placed at A, such that OA=18cm, its real inverted image is formed at A itself, as shown in figure. When a liquid of refractive index μ1 is put between the lens and the mirror, the pin has to be moved to A′, such that OA′=27cm, to get its inverted real image at A′ itself. The value of μ1 will be:
(A)2
(B)34✓ Correct
(C)3
(D)23
Answer: (B)
Solution
The image returns to the object only when light strikes the mirror normally and retraces its path, which happens when the object sits at the focal point of the lens system. With no liquid, that focal length is f=18 cm, and the lens-maker's relation for the equiconvex lens, f1=(1.5−1)R2, gives R=18 cm. When a liquid of index μ1 fills the gap between lens and mirror, it acts as a plano-concave lens in contact with the glass lens, and the combination now focuses from 27 cm. Writing 271=fglass1+fliquid1 with fglass1=181 and fliquid1=(μ1−1)(−181), we get 271=181−18μ1−1. Multiplying through by 18, 2718=1−(μ1−1), so 32=2−μ1 and μ1=34.
