Determine the electric dipole moment of the system of three charges, placed on the vertices of an equilateral triangle, as shown in the figure:
(A)3qℓ2j^−i^
(B)(qℓ)2i^+j^
(C)2qℓj^
(D)−3qℓj^✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Place the three charges on the equilateral triangle and treat the two +q and −q pairs as two dipoles, each of magnitude qℓ. From the geometry each dipole vector points 30∘ on either side of the downward vertical, that is of −j^. When you add them, the horizontal (i^) components are equal and opposite and cancel, while the vertical components reinforce. The resultant is 2(qℓ)cos30∘ along −j^, and since cos30∘=23 this is 2qℓ⋅23(−j^)=−3qℓj^.
