The major product 'Y' in the following reaction is:-
(A)(see structure)✓ Correct
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (A)
Solution
Read the sequence one arrow at a time. Acetophenone, Ph−CO−CHX3, is a methyl ketone, so sodium hypochlorite drives the haloform reaction and oxidises it to benzoic acid, PhCOOH. Thionyl chloride then swaps the acid's −OH for chlorine to give benzoyl chloride, PhCOCl. That acid chloride is attacked by the nitrogen of aniline, and after loss of HCl the major product is the amide benzanilide, PhCONHPh - an anilide, not a Schiff base.
