A concave mirror has radius of curvature of 40 cm . It is at the bottom of a glass that has water filled up to 5 cm (see figure). If a small particle is floating on the surface of water, its image as seen, from directly above the glass, is at a distance d from the surface of water. The value of d is close to : (Refractive index of water =1.33 )
(A)13.4 cm
(B)8.8 cm✓ Correct
(C)6.7 cm
(D)11.7 cm
Answer: (B)
Solution
A radius of curvature of 40cm gives the concave mirror a focal length of magnitude 20cm. The floating particle sits on the water surface, a distance 5cm above the mirror, so take u=−5cm and f=−20cm. The mirror formula v1+u1=f1 gives v1=−201+51=201, so the mirror forms an image v=320cm from it, that is at a depth 5+320=335cm below the water surface. Finally the water raises this image by refraction, so the depth seen from above is reduced by the refractive index: d=1.3335/3=435≈8.8cm.
