If dichloromethane(DCM) and water( ) are used for differential extraction, which one of the following statements is correct?
  1. (A)DCM and would stay as lower and upper layer respectively in the S.F✓ Correct
  2. (B)DCM and will make turbid/colloidal mixture
  3. (C)DCM and would stay as upper and lower layer respectively in the separating funnel(S.F)
  4. (D)DCM and will be miscible clearly

Answer: (A)

Solution

Dichloromethane is denser than water, about against g cm, and the two do not mix, so in the separating funnel they settle into two layers with the heavier dichloromethane at the bottom and water floating above. Differential extraction relies on exactly this clean split, so dichloromethane forms the lower layer and water the upper layer.
