In the given circuit the cells have zero internal resistance. The currents (in Amperes) passing through resistance R1 and R2 respectively, are:
(A)1,2
(B)2,2
(C)0.5,0✓ Correct
(D)0,1
Answer: (C)
Solution
Because both cells have zero internal resistance, each branch is governed purely by the resistors and the emfs stamped on it. Following the loop that contains R2, the cell emfs sitting on either side of that branch are arranged to oppose and cancel, so no net potential is left to drive it and the current through R2 is zero. That leaves a single live loop feeding R1, and Kirchhoff's voltage law around it with the given emf and R1 fixes that current at half an ampere. So R1 carries 0.5 A while R2 carries none.
