The density of a material in SI units is . In certain units in which the unit of length is 25 cm and the unit of mass 50 g, the numerical value of density of the material is:
  1. (A)40✓ Correct
  2. (B)16
  3. (C)640
  4. (D)410

Answer: (A)

Solution

Re-expressing a density in a new system means rewriting one kilogram and one metre in the new units. One kilogram is of the new mass units, and one metre is new length units, so one cubic metre is new volume units. The density kg m therefore reads in the new system. Equivalently the numerical value scales by relative to SI, again . The figure falls from to because the chosen mass unit is large while the length unit shrinks the volume unit.
